My journey with ALS

September – 2nd Week

On Saturday, I woke up, and Amy took our car to the service station for new oil. When she returned, she helped me get onto the rollator. It moved forward, and I fell; I hit my head on the dresser (it was not very serious in my opinion). Amy called my brother and Mark to come over and help me. When they arrived, my brother called someone in the medical profession, and they told them to take me to a hospital to do a CT scan of my head and a few X-rays of my neck. I said there were no serious issues, and I did not want to go to the hospital, but they were instant, so we left. They put on some clothes, my hat, and took me downstairs. They went through the backyard and put me in my brother’s car.

Then we left to go to a hospital; Mark followed. When we arrived at the emergency room, they helped me get in. Then Mark left, and Amy and Alan took me in. We gave them my information and waited for them to take me into a room, which took about 15 minutes. It took a long time; getting the scan and X-rays took close to 5 hours, which was ridiculous given there were no serious issues. My mother had some problems, and Alan told his wife to pick her up and bring her to the hospital. She arrived, and we left. Michelle got her car to the entrance, but the guy who was supposed to take me out wasn’t any good. He first tried to lift me, but was unable to get me into the seat. I almost fell. They got another guy to help, and they got me in, but my left leg hit the bottom of the door, and I was bleeding. Sadly, we did not notice until we got home.

Mark & Robin went to pick some Greek food from Nestor, and at the house when we arrived. Mark got me out of the car and took me to the backyard to get me into the house. He got me on the chairlift and then into the kitchen. I had my food while Amy, Mark, Robin, and Michelle went into the dining room for dinner. After, Amy and Mark went to buy a lottery ticket and then went to Ralphs for Italian Ices. When they returned, we had dessert, brushed my teeth, and then Mark and Amy took me to the shower. After Amy washed me, Mark came in to lift me, put me in the wheelchair, and then got me into bed (while moving me he fell down on the bed with me). I want to thank Mark for everything he is doing for me!

On Sunday, we got up around 10:30. Amy helped me into the wheelchair, took me to the bathroom, and then to the kitchen for breakfast. After, she took me to the office and then went for her massage. When she returned, I had my lunch. I continued to work until 6:30, and then Amy came in and moved me to the kitchen, where we had dinner, dessert, and then my drugs (I had to wait a little time to take them). After, she called Mark & Robin to see if they could come over to put me in bed. They were returning from one of their children’s homes, making it easy for them to get to my house. Mark moved me from the kitchen to the bedroom. Then he lifted me and put me on the bed. He was so kind and helpful!

On Monday, Alex arrived by about 9:30. He got me showered and dressed, and then we headed to the kitchen, where Amy took care of me. I will add that my legs are getting weaker, and my arms/hands are not functioning well. Both hands shake when I use the feeding tube, and I have trouble typing on the computer; I basically use my left hand. At 11:30, the contractor handling the bathroom remodeling came by to review the cost; they will start on Wednesday. At 1:00, we both had therapy (Alex and I), and then we got home, and I went to the office, and Amy went to Alyssa’s house to handle all items we needed for the bathroom. At about 6:00, Alex opened something, and the alarm went off. Took me a few minutes to get to the alarm and shut it off, but the police showed up. The officer was very nice, and I wrote a note on my phone to explain the problem. Amy got back at 7:00 and started making dinner after I went to bed.

On Tuesday, I got up around 8:30, took a shower, and then dressed before heading to the kitchen with Alex’s help. Amy took care of my drugs, protocol, Miralax, and shakes (I will add that she shook one of the protein shakes, which Alex opened, and she covered her shirt, hair, and pants with it; also got my shirt). Alex then took me to the bathroom, got me on the chairlift, and brought me to the car. We arrived at the gallery by 11:45, went to the bathroom, and then headed to my office. I scanned a couple of paintings by Tim Jahn with Alyssa’s help, and I took care of the emails. At 2:30, I had lunch, and I spilled one of the shakes on my phone (Amy cleaned it up). Alex then cleaned up my desk. We got home after 7:00, had dinner, and then I had my dessert. After that, I brushed my teeth (which is getting more difficult), and then we went to bed.

On Wednesday, we got up early because people were coming to redo our bathroom. Alex took me to the shower, got me dressed, and Amy did my breakfast (which was a lot of liquids). Then, I went to my chair in the living room. The gentleman came in and gutted the bathroom. It was amazing to see them remove the shower glass, tiles, and other fixtures from the house. We had the therapy at 1:00, but before leaving, I had an issue (the protein shakes went up my throat and caused me to choke), so I stayed home; Alex went. I continued to sit in my chair, used the urinal a few times, we ended up having dinner, and I went to my bed.

Thursday was another early day. Alex got me up and took me to the shower downstairs. We then came upstairs, got dressed, and had breakfast. Kathy stayed with us while the guys worked on the bathroom, and we headed to the car to go to Columbia Hospital. I was getting Botox for the saliva. We left at 10:00 and arrived at the hospital in under an hour. My appointment was at 11:30, so we had enough time to get there. Had the injection on both sites on my neck, and was told by the doctor that it would take about 5 days for it to work. Afterward, I had all the medical professionals for ALS come in to discuss the last 3 months and ask questions; had a breathing test (which did not work well), and we finished around 4:00. The drive home was long, an hour and 40 minutes. I got to the kitchen, and Amy made me chili for dinner. After I finished my tasks (ice cream, etc.), I went to bed.

On Friday, Amy got up early and had Alex take her to the train so she could go to the gallery. When Alex got back, he helped me get dressed and took me to the kitchen for breakfast. After that, he took me to the bathroom, and the doorbell rang; the guys were there to work on the bathroom (not the one I was using). After, I went to my office and worked. About 1:30, Alex came in to give me lunch and I continued to work.
