My journey with ALS

August – 3rd week

We got home on Friday around 7:00, and Alex needed to visit with his mom, so Amy and I had dinner together. After I used ice cream to take the drugs, brushed my teeth, and then Amy helped me get to the bedroom and onto the bed. I finally went to sleep.

Saturday, we woke up at 10:00, and Amy suggested that we first have breakfast. I had the protein shakes (used to syringe for a few on the medications) and used ice cream to get the rest of the drugs in my body. Afterward, we got in the shower, and Amy washed me, then took me to the bedroom to get dressed. Amy had a lot of stuff to take care of, so I went into the office and she went out. I had lunch around 3:30, used the urinal, and continued working on the computer (typing is so difficult). Amy got back at 4:50 and started making dinner. We had Indian food, then ice cream for the drugs (also need to use the syringe for the Doxy since it is liquid), and finished with the toothbrush and sinus rinse. We got to the bed, and I had some trouble; I fell flat on my face. Amy was able to move me, so I was able to turn around. We then watched a movie, and I went to sleep.

Sunday morning, we got up around 8:45 and showered. Another person was coming by to look at the bathroom, and Mike was stopping by to take the Corvette out of the garage because it needed a New York State inspection. When everyone left, Amy took me to the kitchen and I had breakfast; Amy took the Corvette to Wond-A-Rama, but they could not do the inspection. They told her she needed to drive it about 50 miles and bring it back (guess it will be next week). I went to the office, and Amy went out (had some things to do). Later, we had dinner, drugs, brushed my teeth, and then went to sleep.

Monday was a very busy day. Around 7:00, I did the Radicava, then went back to sleep. Around 9:00, I showered, got dressed, and had breakfast. Around noon, Alex and I went to the physical therapy, where we were both using them. We did not get out for close to two hours. We headed home, packed the car, and were off to Boston (I had an appointment at the hospital on Tuesday at 2:00). It took Alex close to 5 hours to get to the hotel; we arrived around 9 pm. I sat in the room having my drugs and shakes, while Amy and Alex went to get some food. When they returned, they helped get me into bed and went to sleep.

Radicava

Tuesday was a very long day. Around 7:20, I did the Radicava, then went back to sleep. Finally got up and Amy took me to the shower, and got me dressed. I started making breakfast, and Amy met Alex, and they went to the restaurant for breakfast. When we were done, we had over one hour to stay in the room before heading to Mass General Brigham. At 1:00, we checked out and went to the hospital (it was right around the corner). At about 2:00, a person took us to a room, where we stayed for over 3 hours. The biggest issue was waiting for different medical personnel to arrive; some took 15-20 minutes to show up, but they did give me a couple of additional medications. It was a very long day. Alex got into the car around 3:30, and we caught up with him after 5:00. Then we headed home, arriving there about 11:00. We ended up going to sleep after midnight. A crazy day!

Massachusetts General Hospital

Wednesday was a very late day. I took Radicava around 7:00, sat up for 30 minutes, and then went back to sleep. Finally got showered, dressed, and into the kitchen. We then went to the gallery, arriving close to 1:00. I had lunch, and Alex gave me a leg massage around 3:30. We then had some gelato and went home. It was raining, so we were all a bit wet when we got into the house. There were also boxes with new chairs – they were so wet. When we got in, Amy made me some dinner, and then they built one of the new chairs for me to try. It was a lot better than the chairs we had. Helaina came by and stayed until around 10:00. After, I shaved, brushed my teeth, used the sinus rinse, and then went to bed. I will add that getting into bed is difficult. Amy and Alex first put my left leg on the bed, but when they lifted the right, I ended up falling face down, and there is pain through my face and neck. They managed to turn me around, so I ended up on my back. Then I went to sleep.

Thursday was a normal day. I took the Radicava around 7:45, and by 8:30, Alex took me to the shower, got me dressed, and headed to the kitchen. When I was done, Amy gave me a jacket (it was a little cold) and we headed to the car. We arrived at the gallery around 11:30, then headed to my office to do a little work. I had lunch around 2:30, and then at 3:30, Alex massaged my legs. After Roz Akin stopped by and gave me some maple syrup. We headed out around 5:00, and then Alex and I had physical therapy at 7:00. Amy had some things to do and then came back and sat on a chair until we were done. When we got home, Amy made me chicken parm, which was tasty, did the drugs, brushed my teeth, used the sinus rinse, and then headed to the bedroom. I finally got in (after some trouble getting my right leg in) and went to sleep.

I am having trouble typing. My left hand is typing, but my right hand isn’t working very well, constantly shaking. I am also having trouble spelling words correctly, and lots of problems sitting straight in a chair. Oh, I am also biting the inside of my mouth multiple times each day, and sometimes there is blood.

Trouble Typing

Friday, I got up before 6:00 and took the Radicava. Doing it in the bed is getting tougher. This time, I spilled half of the water bottle on the bed. Around 8:30, Alex came in, moved me to the shower, got me dressed, and then took me to the kitchen. Getting all the drugs ready is time-consuming these days. By 10:30, we headed to the car and arrived at the gallery around noon. Our show opens at 4:00, titled Sweet Treats.

Howard you amaze me every week with how much you do and how hard the struggle is becoming more and more difficult. You are always in mine and Amy prayers. Wish we lived in New York and could visit you and Amy.
