My journey with ALS

April – 3rd Week

I was hoping that the weekend was going to be a relaxing one. Friday night I ended up being on my own. After dinner (I had two large pancakes and used a great deal of syrup), Amy had to go into the city to help a family member. I realized that I needed to get more syrup. So, I texted Kim and asked him to send me four more bottles! I also need to thank my brother Alan and my close friend Mark Hoorwitz, who let me know if I needed anything to reach out.

I woke up at 8 am and did all my routines … was done by 10 am. I picked up Amy at the train station around 2 pm, and then we went to McDonalds for a cheeseburger – I wanted to see if it would work. It did. It’s kind of funny that we tried making burgers at the house, and it was impossible to eat them (they broke up into little pieces), but it was not much of an issue with a Kid’s Meal at McDonald’s – I even ate 2 French fries.

Two gift boxes from my sister Sheryl and Tom arrived.

Sunday, I was up at 7:45 and got through everything. Amy went back to the city, and I just relaxed. Working a 5-day week (driving, walking, packing, hanging, color correcting, etc.) makes me very tired. Having two days doing nothing is very nice.

On Monday morning I was by myself. I got up close to 7, did my routine, and got to the gallery around 10:40 am. I spent most of the day on the computer, but I packed a couple of paintings that must go out next week. My nephew Nathan and his father Neil (who has been helping us for more than a month now) spent the day hanging the upcoming exhibition … they did an amazing job. Amy even started getting things ready to go to the Philadelphia Show.

BIG NEWS: I emailed all the individuals who are part of the IRS Art Advisory Panel to inform them that I was no longer a member … I must thank them all for their replies. That group is amazing, and I will miss working with them.

On Tuesday, we were adjusting the lights in the gallery for the upcoming show, and I decided to climb the ladder … well, that was not a fun thing. The weakness in my left leg made it very difficult. It is wild how quickly things change. I had no issues climbing a ladder at the Palm Beach show (in February). I also use a lot of paper these days … need to write things down for people. Yes, I have a couple of those writing devices, but I like pencils and paper for some reason.

Louis Stern, an old friend and member of the IRS Panel, stopped by for a visit. I spent a lot of time writing replies on my pad of paper and then decided to try my ElevenLabs Text to Speech app on my iPad. The app has my voice on it, so I could type a reply and speak!! I have been told that the company will have the app working on a Samsung phone by the end of the month; looking forward to that!

On Wednesday I decided not to work out. I wanted to see if it would make walking easier, but it did not … still the same.  Alyssa and I were busy most of the day doing color corrections (the photographer came in on Tuesday afternoon and took a lot of photos). I was also answering emails … it is nice that so many deals are made through emails and texts … no need to talk!!! LOL!! Been having pizza for lunch this week; seems easy to swallow when you add a little extra tomato sauce (something the pizza place – Cassiano’s – includes; they make excellent pizza and it is Lance’s favorite).

Amy, Neil, and Nathan worked on getting the historical works packed for the Phili show, so we left a little late that night.

I got up at 6, took 1 medication, and worked out on Thursday. Then took 2 more (plus Dianne’s Protocol) and had my waffles. Sadly, I was out of Dailey’s syrup, so I used one we bought at the supermarket. Man, I cannot wait to get more of the good stuff. Got to the gallery before 10 (nice), and all my medication refills arrived – needed to get them early since we will be at the Phili show when they would normally arrive. My insurance companies (CIGNA & Medicare) and the hospital were very helpful in making that happen.

I have to say that some people walking on the streets of Manhattan pay no attention. There were several times when people were glued to watching something on their phones and almost bumped into me. If that happens, it isn’t going to be fun.

Friday, I did my routine in the morning, stopped by the conservator’s studio to drop off a painting, and was at the gallery around 10. The walk from the garage to the gallery is getting slower. Our show – BLOOM – opens tonight from 5 to 8 pm, so everyone is getting things ready. Plus, we need to finish packing for the Phili show (sadly, there’s not much I can help with). I did pack up another painting that is going out next week! Pizza for lunch again, and I had a big plastic garbage bag covering me because food falls out of my mouth while eating and I am wearing a white shirt for tonight’s opening. I am also considering investing in one of the companies that make napkins because I use so many!

I wish everyone who reads this a wonderful weekend. And if you happen to by in New York City on Saturday, April 19th, the gallery will be open from 1 – 5 pm.
