My journey with ALS

July – 4th Week

On Friday night, I got home around 7, and my brother and his wife stopped by for dinner. They brought Italian food, so I sat in the kitchen, and Amy took my Chicken Parmesan and pureed it; it was very good. They also brought Carvel ice cream, so I had it for dessert. Then Alan helped Amy repack a walker she bought because it wasn’t very good. They finally left around 9:30, and I got to the edge of the bed and brushed my teeth. Then I got into bed with Amy’s help. Finally went to sleep around 11:00.

Saturday, Amy woke up a little before 7, and I had her get the little device to turn off the alarm. A little after nine, we got up, and I went to the kitchen, where I followed my normal routine. Then I made my way to the shower (which is more difficult these days). Amy came in to wash me, and then I got to bed, and she helped me get dressed. At around noon, a couple of people came over to see about making our bathrooms easier for me to use. They spent some time reviewing all the options and will get back to us with the costs. After they left, Amy had some tasks to attend to, and I worked in my office.  She came home with Chinese food for dinner, followed by ice cream. Then, I sat in the kitchen for a bit and ended up having pineapple ice and ROS. Oh, then I brushed my teeth. I got to the bedroom, Amy helped me get into bed, and I finally went to sleep.

On Sunday, I woke up three times, and by 9:00, I sat up (with Amy’s help). Finally, I was able to stand up (it takes a bit of time), and I made my way to the kitchen. I finished breakfast, brushed my teeth, and slowly made my way to the shower. Amy helped me wash up, and then I decided to shave. I cut my face a couple of times, and when I got to bed to get dressed, I noticed that I missed a couple of spots. I had Amy get me the electric shaver and cleaned up my face. Amy had several things to do (including seeing the grandkids), so I stayed home. Around noon, I took the Doxy and then gathered all the necessary items for lunch in the living room. Around 2:15, it took lunch, and at one point, I spilled some of the protein shakes on my pants. I decided to go to the bathroom, and it took me 10 minutes to get out of the chair (I need one that will lift me up). It took a bit of time to get to the bathroom, and after that, I went to the office since the chair there is a little easier to get up. Amy came home just before 5:30, and she had a virtual board meeting with the Antiques Council (I resigned, and Amy has taken my position). We had dinner and relaxed.

On Monday, I was up early due to the Radicava, and I had an appointment at 1:20 for physical therapy. I had breakfast, showered (very difficult getting into the bathroom now), got dressed, and made my way back to the kitchen to do the Doxy (all with Amy’s help). Around 1:05, we headed to the therapy place. After Amy filled out so many forms, they took us in. The therapist had us go to a private room for an evaluation, and then therapy started… he had me start by going to the parallel bars and standing up and sitting down about 30 times. Then the guy had me walk with a walker, and then another therapist had me do a bunch of leg exercises. After physical therapy, Amy took me home (I definitely had trouble moving around that evening, my legs were exhausted). Once I was in the house, Amy went to exchange some pants she bought me, filled the car with gas for our trip to Newport, and got her nails done.  She made us dinner, of course, and mine was pureed, then she packed for our trip.

On Tuesday, I did my usual ‘stuff’, and Amy finished packing the car, and we left around 12:30  and headed to Newport. Did my Doxy in the car … did not spill the water … used a bottle to urinate, and I played some games while Amy drove. We arrived at the hotel around 4:30, and Neil and Nathan helped unload the car (a lot of stuff), they got the scooter out of the back of our car, and I made my way to the room. After we all settled into our rooms, we got in Neil’s car and went to check out the show. I stayed in the car, and a great dealer, Jasmine Doussiere, came to the car to let me know about the Nantucket show, which we could not do this year.

After Amy, Nathan & Neil checked out our booths, we headed to the supermarket. I got a supermarket scooter and went through the full market, something I hadn’t done in a long time. After we headed back to the hotel, Amy got me a kid’s order of spaghetti and meatballs from the restaurant at the hotel… then she pureed it. It was very nice. She went back to have dinner with her family, and then they brought ice cream for me so I could have the RSO. Finally tried to get into the high bed, which Amy helped me with. I would say that the height of the bed in an ADA-compliant bedroom is way too high. Amy also brought a lifting bed backrest. My problems were: a) when I turned on my side I was at the edge of the backrest, which was not good since my arms were hitting the rails, b) when I had Amy help me move towards the top edge, it was ok, but when I lifted the backrest I slid down, c) when I used the urinal at night I made a mess because of the height of the bed. The tube was essentially level with the bed, and it filled up quickly, then poured out.

Wednesday, I took the Radicava at 6:30 and had to deal with a wet sheet and underwear. Amy finally got up and helped me get everything off. She also assisted me in getting up and helped me to the shower, where she washed me. I used the sink to brush my teeth (the scooter could fit underneath it), and then I had breakfast, and we went to the show. Lance was on his way up to Newport.

Amy, Neil, and Nathan started unpacking all the paintings, and then Nathan and Neil did a great job hanging the historical booth. Amy was organizing the contemporary booth. Lance arrived around three and started hanging work on the contemporary booth. I was scooting around and the dealers were so nice – shaking my hand, kissing and hugging me. At 6:00, we left and got back to the hotel. For dinner, I had Tikka Masala, and then Amy went downstairs for dinner. When she was gone, I needed to use an empty water bottle to pee. It worked well, but when I moved the bottle to the desk, it fell on me and made a mess (including my pants, shoes, scooter, etc.). I texted Amy to come back to help me. She was finishing her dinner, so she brought her glass of wine with her. She helped me get clean, and I finally got in bed, and she massaged my legs and feet. Finally went to sleep.

On Thursday, I woke up twice and did my best to ensure the urinal would work correctly; sadly, it did not. I woke up at five and took the Radicava, then went back to sleep and woke up after 8:00. Finally got up around 8:40. Amy took my wet pants off and then helped me get out of the crazy high bed, we showered, I brushed my teeth at the sink, had my breakfast, got dressed, and we were heading to the show by about 11:15. When we got there the family finished the three sections of the contemporary side, including the Dunkel space – Stu will the there tomorrow to paint at the show.

At 12:30, I took the Doxy in part of the contemporary booth, and I started coughing. The syringe was still in the feeding tube, and the protein shakes from the morning ended up coming out and covered my pants and the base of the scooter. Amy helped clean it up … I kept the pants on till at least 9:00 pm. We left at around four and headed back to the hotel. The crew was attending a dealer party, sponsored by a fabulous couple who support the show. I stayed at the hotel, as I would not have been able to use my scooter on the property.  When Amy got back, she made me some spaghetti and meat sauce, blended it, and it was good. She then went downstairs for dinner, and I spent a couple of hours updating my blog. Lance, Neil, and Nathan stopped by with some ice cream, and I got the RSO. A bit later, my throat was dry, and I was coughing, trying to get some saliva in my throat. Amy tried to get me up on the bed, and I fell forward towards the edge of the bed. I couldn’t get up, so she got Lance, Nathan, and Neil to come over and help me up, and then they moved me to the top of the bed. The family was so helpful! I went to sleep.

Friday was a relaxing morning. I woke up a few times, and the urinal made a mess again; I ended up taking the underpants off. Around 6:30, I took the Radicava and fell back to sleep, waking up at 7:45. I fell back asleep, and we did not get out of bed until close to 11:00 (had my drugs around 10:00). I ended up showering around 12 and then had my protein shakes. I figured I would have more shakes at 3:00, and then we were heading to the show at 4:00.
